The Spring Equinox, also known as the Vernal Equinox, is a celestial event occurring each year on either March 20 or March 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 22 or 23 in the Southern Hemisphere. On this day, day and night are almost equal in length. “Equinox” is derived from the Latin words “aequus” which means equal) and “nox” that means night. The sun appears overhead at noontime from Earth’s equator. The earth starts to warm and appear to wake up from the cold winter.
The Spring season begins at the equinox and with it many holy days occur in various religious traditions and celebrations of rebirth and renewal. The earth feels alive as the growing season begins. The birds migrate home and mammals are mating and waking up from winter slumbers. The ice on the rivers, ponds and still waters melts and water life begins showing up again.
Take a moment to appreciate the delicate balance between the celestial dance between day and night, light and darkness that sings out the arrival of spring!
